Karate Spirit

I once asked Master Kanazawa, "What is the most important aspect of karate?"  He answered, "Seishin".  "Seishin" means 'spirit', not in the religious sense, but in the sense of personal identity and of what we represent in life.  This video tries to explain the concept of spirit and how it relates to karate.

Gankaku-sho

Gankaku-sho is an advanced kata that has been introduced into the SKIF extended syllabus content by Master Kanazawa.  Two of the interesting aspects of this kata are the multiple stance changes, and the diagonal embusen (performance line) of the kata.
I have included a couple of presentations of the kata in this post - the first video demonstrates the kata as a whole, and the second video breaks down the movements with a commentary of what is happening.  I hope you enjoy the content.

Seishin Shotokan Karate - 10th Anniversary

This month, my karate club celebrates 10 years in existence!  The past ten years have been absolutely great and I look forward to many more good years to come.  Thank you to all of you who have made the past ten years possible - my family, my instructors, and of course my members.  Life has been better because of all of you.

Discipline

In karate, and martial arts in general, discipline is often one of the main reasons why a parent enrolls their child in your program in the first place.  The video below talks about the importance of discipline and what it really means.  This video is useful for students, parents and instructors alike.

Jiyu ippon-kumite - Jodan attack

Here is another video from my YouTube channel. This video shows some different defenses against a jodan oizuki attack as practiced in Master Kanazawa's SKIF kumite system. The video demonstrates and explains the key points of each defense.
